This is a unit that I teach my kindergarteners that can be very hard for them to comprehend. The five and six-year-old brain is very concrete. They have not developed the ability to think abstractly. This creates the need to teach subtraction to them in a very hands-on and explicit way. I also have students in my class who have not mastered their numbers yet because of learning disabilities. Therefore, I need to teach them the concept of subtraction without using written equations. Using the ASSURE Model to create a unit of study about subtraction strategies will help me process all of the variations my lessons need to include to be beneficial to all of my students.
