Every teacher runs their classroom differently. The behavior management is different. The schedule is different. The student expectations are different, and the technology is different. It can be a lot for even the most experienced teachers to adapt to a new classroom every day. Micro-learning can make those transitions easier for everyone. Therefore, I created a micro-learning video for substitutes to use in my classroom to help them navigate our Daily Lessons PowerPoint.
According to Surge 9, there are four important aspects of micro-learning. Micro-learning needs to be brief, bite-sized, chunks, and just in time (2019). The micro-learning I created is five minutes long. Although the recommended time for micro-learning varies depending on the source, most recommend between three and ten minutes. The five-minute video I created gives substitutes time to get their bearings and watch the video before students arrive in the mornings. The video is also “bite-sized” in that it covers one objective. It offers substitutes tips on basic navigation and troubleshooting during the PowerPoint lesson. The video is chunked into three sections. The video demonstrates basic navigation, then gives tips for troubleshooting, and finally, provides a knowledge check to reinforce the learning from the videos. The final aspect of micro-learning is that it is “just in time.” This is most common when the micro-learning is sent out to mobile devices. That will not work for my classroom since I don’t have contact with my substitutes outside of the school building. However, the substitute will be able to access the video right before starting the day and even throughout the day if they need to watch it again. The time between when they obtain the information to when they use the information is very small which makes retention more likely.
I am looking forward to supporting the substitute teachers in my classroom with this new micro-learning video. Good substitute teachers are hard to find, especially, those brave enough to attempt kindergarten classrooms. We truly appreciate their time and the effort they put into helping our students learn while we are gone.
